Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy
What happens during the first session?
The initial session is a time for us to become acquainted and to evaluate whether we can establish a good working relationship and whether I’m the right person to help you. It is also a good time for us to explore why you are seeking therapy and what goals you have for our work together. During the first session we will discuss fee arrangements, and policies outlined in the Description of Psychotherapy Services (Forms). If you haven’t been in therapy before, the initial session is a good time to ask and questions you have about the process of psychotherapy.
How often do I need to come?
Appointments are once per week and are 50 minutes long (45 minutes for children). Under certain circumstances appointments may be more or less often. Sometimes I am asked if it is okay to schedule appointments every other week. During the beginning stages of therapy I do not recommend every other week appointments. That frequency of meeting does not allow for enough continuity of treatment for desired change to occur or goals to be met. During the later stages of therapy, every other week appointments may be a welcome transition.
How long will it take for me to notice change?
Sometimes, people feel an immediate relief in talking with someone. But, it also happens that you may feel worse before you start to feel better. This can result from working on issues and recognizing feelings that may have been long denied.
Will my insurance cover the costs of each appointment?
Accepted Insurance
- Aetna
- Anthem Blue Cross
- Blue Shield
- Interplan
- Magellan

I am currently on a number of insurance panels. If you do not see your plan on this list, please check with your insurance provider to see if I am on their list. If you have mental health benefits, you will pay the copay at the time of service. I will bill the insurance company for the balance. If the insurance company does not reimburse, you will be responsible for the balance of payment.
Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)
I am also an EAP provider. If you have employee benefits, you and your family may have access to short-term counseling. I am on many of these EAP panels. You may wish to check with your employer’s human resource department for more information about your specific benefits.

How long will I need to be in therapy?
During the initial session we can discuss what you are hoping to accomplish and what best serves your needs. I offer both long-term and short-term psychotherapy for individuals, couples and children. Short term therapy is targeted towards specific goals and can also be used for assessment purposes. Children and families may benefit from filial therapy which is shorter term and based on a 16-20 session model. (Find out more here.) However, many couples and individuals benefit from the support offered through longer term depth work.
Do I need to fill out any forms before we meet?
No. However, I will be asking you to fill out some forms after our first meeting. Here they are if you would like to get a head start.
