Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy

What happens during the first session?

The initial session is a time for us to become acquainted and to evaluate whether we can establish a good working relationship and whether I’m the right person to help you. It is also a good time for us to explore why you are seeking therapy and what goals you have for our work together. During the first session we will discuss fee arrangements, and policies outlined in the Description of Psychotherapy Services (Forms). If you haven’t been in therapy before, the initial session is a good time to ask and questions you have about the process of psychotherapy.

How often do I need to come?

Appointments are once per week and are 60 minutes long. Under certain circumstances appointments may be more or less often. Sometimes I am asked if it is okay to schedule appointments every other week. During the beginning stages of therapy I do not recommend every other week appointments. That frequency of meeting does not allow for enough continuity of treatment for desired change to occur or goals to be met. During the later stages of therapy, every other week appointments may be a welcome transition.

How long will it take for me to notice change?

Sometimes, people feel an immediate relief in talking with someone. But, it also happens that you may feel worse before you start to feel better. This can result from working on issues and recognizing feelings that may have been long denied.

Will my insurance cover the costs of each appointment?

I am only currently on the Beacon Health Options panel. If you have a different insurance provider check with them about your out-of-network benefits and whether they will reimburse you for services provided by an out-of-network provider. If you choose to use these benefits, you will pay my fee at the time of service and I will provide you with a "super bill" at the end of each month which you will submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

How long will I need to be in therapy?

During the initial session we can discuss what you are hoping to accomplish and what best serves your needs. I offer both long-term and short-term psychotherapy for individuals and couples. Short term therapy is targeted towards specific goals and can also be used for assessment purposes. However, many couples and individuals benefit from the support offered through longer term depth work.

Do I need to fill out any forms before we meet?

Yes. When we schedule the first session I will send you by email a link to my online intake system where you can fill out all the necessary information.
